The Laboratory

The Laboratory,
a spacious, light filled, flexible event space

The George Farha Auditorium provides tiered seating for 240 that can be retracted to create a beautiful dining space with fully glazed doors leading out onto an expansive piazza.

Integral to the Upper Cloister is a breakout space overlooking the auditorium for informal discussion and small gatherings.  There are five adaptable Informatics suites with free-thinking spaces to stimulate creativity and a seminar room with full video conferencing facilities. The James Caird, the whaler in which Sir Ernest Shackleton made his celebrated voyage to Elephant Island, is at the heart of the James Caird Hall overlooking the Barry Buildings and front lawns through impressive floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The Shawcross sculpture complements and draws on the spirit of endurance and is exhibited at the heart of the James Caird Hall.

Sustainability is a core principal in the design of The Laboratory and the building uses innovative, environmentally inexpensive and energy-efficient systems.  The design achieves BREEAM ‘Excellent’ status.  BREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.

for the The Laboratory

“The Laboratory has proved an exceptional venue for all sorts of events, scholarly and social, cultural and communal; just as I’d hoped it would. It’s a home for Science, but a venue for the arts - and for anyone who wants to host a special occasion in a very special space.”

Dr JAF Spence, The Master
